The Pro’s and Con’s of Common Window Material

Dec 5, 2016

While browsing through show rooms and magazines can start off exciting, buying new windows in San Diego can quickly become overwhelming. With so many styles and materials to choose from, it’s tough to decide which windows are right for your home. The truth is, every window has its benefits and disadvantages, and some more than others. Depending on how many you are purchasing, buying new windows can get expensive so it is important you are happy with your decision. To help take some of the pressure off, we have made a short list of some of the most popular window materials, as well as the pros and cons associated with each.

Wood:

This classic material can be found on many older homes, offering a vintage touch of beauty. The windows are available in a wide variety of species, stains and styles. Many homeowners prefer wooden windows due to their warm, natural look, but these windows do tend to be associated with some problems. Wooden frames are not very resistant to the elements, and can easily be affected by intense sun or moderate rain. Over time, wooden frames have the potential to rot, causing damage and even inviting insects into the home. If you choose to purchase wooden window frames, keep in mind that sanding and painting are part of the regular maintenance process.

Fiberglass

A wonderful alternative to wood window frames are fiberglass windows. Fiberglass has become increasingly more popular over the year due to its strong resemblance to wood. In fact, the look and feel of fiberglass is so similar to wood that many people fail to tell the difference. Another added benefit to this window material is while it resembles wood, these windows require much less maintenance, are more durable, and last longer. The only down side with these windows may be their price tag, which tends to be higher than many other models.

Vinyl

Vinyl window frames are currently the most popular windows on the market, and for good reason. These windows are known for their energy efficiency, which can help you save money on your monthly utility bill. Vinyl windows feature double (and sometimes triple) pane glass that helps reduce outside noise. Vinyl also holds up well against harsh weather and only requires the occasional cleaning as maintenance. These windows also come in a wide variety of colors and styles, making them easy to integrate into the design of your home. Plus, much to a homeowner’s surprise, these windows are one of the most affordable options available.
